Dear Parents and Carers,

A warm welcome to Year 1! May we take this opportunity to wish you and your child every success and happiness in this new year group. Please do not hesitate to contact your class teacher if you have any questions or queries throughout the school year.

This half term, our learning theme will be ‘Good to Be Me’. Please look on the school website, on the Year 1 page, for the half term curriculum overview.

The children will be developing their literacy and numeracy skills and will continue to work through our phonic programme to improve their spelling, handwriting and reading. They will continue to read in groups, twice a week, and on a Monday or a Friday will bring home a reading book for the week. Please read and discuss the book with your child at home and bring their book bags and contents to school every day.

New in Year One:

All children will now bring home weekly spellings to learn linked to their phonics work. There will not be a ‘formal’ spelling test, but helping your child learn these at home will assist them in their daily class work. We have provided each child with a little book to keep at home to use for practising their weekly spellings. Some children will continue to work on flashcards at home and in school. Thank you all for your continued support at home.

After October half term, there will be a three week rotation of homework tasks. One week will be comprehension work linked to the reading book, one week will be maths based and the third week will be a writing focus.

In Year 1 the children are encouraged to be more independent and therefore book bags are not checked. Please ask your child to give any messages or notes to the class teacher. Teachers will be explaining these new systems to the children in their classes.

In the past it has been very congested at the Year 1 door. We would therefore appreciate it if you could leave your children at the door and encourage them to come into school on their own. An adult is available at the door to take messages. 1R will leave school at the end of the day via the door next to the computer suite.

Year 1 P.E. days this term are:

Monday and Tuesday For health and safety reasons please ensure that hair is tied back and earrings are removed. P.E. bags will be kept at school all week and will be returned home half- termly for washing. Please could all clothing and plimsolls be clearly named.

Year 1 Library days:

These are currently being confirmed and we will let you know as soon as we can. Please keep an eye on the Year 1 window for information updates.

And finally a huge thank you to all those parents who are ordering lunches in advance on line with their child. It is a great help and prevents the children worrying about lunchtime.

It has been lovely to see so many smiley faces this week!
